Okashira Screwheads- what swimbait?

Jig it, spin it, buzz it, if it's got a wire or a lead head, it can and will be discussed in here.

Okashira Screwheads- what swimbait?

Post by Junk Fisherman » Sun Aug 15, 2021 6:20 am

Looking for alternatives to a Sparkshad. What else have you had success with? Anything that withstands more than a few fish before getting torn up? And I've had a lot of luck with the Screwhead/Sparkshad this year. Which do you think is more responsible for the success of the lure- the Sparkshad or the Screwhead.

Since they only have a 2/0 hook, I'd stick with baits not much longer than 3.2 inches. The Duo Realis Boostar is a pretty good fit. Easy shiners work well also.

Easy Shiners are good so are Rhythm Waves that are a bit more durable

My first choice is a 3" Fish Arrow Flash J shad (boot or split tail)

Thanks fellas for the suggestions. One bait I'm going to try is the Zman Slim SwimZ.

I'd been using 2.8 Keitechs and small Sparkshads a bunch, but recently changed to 3.5" HogFarmer Spunk Shads that I cut down a bit and round out to get the right length. Had that idea after watching a talk about how spy and screwbaits work best with as little tail-swimming action as possible. The trailer is durable, as well.

Have you tried the Reins Bubbling Shaker Worm on this rig? Just wondering, if so, how they compare to the HogFarmer.

I have not, but that looks like a good option to try!

3" Spark shad or hazedong shad is what the okashira head was designed for
can also try the rhythm wave as its quite a bit more affordable for a low action option there is the OSP dolive stick 3.5" another possible consideration would be a hp shadtail 3"

I did try the Hog Farmer Spunk Shad as Drakestar suggested and had some success. Oddly, some of my screwheads would not turn with the Spunk Shad but others would. I have to play around with this since I really liked the subtle action of the Spunk Shad. I also tried the Z-Man Slim Swimz Swimbait and while it worked, it is just a little too small IMO. I ordered some Z-Man Swimmin' Trout Trick Swimbait in 3.5" and am curious how those will work. The only reason I am looking for alternatives is that I fly through the Spark Shads in some waters with lots of small bass.

One thing that seems to help with keeping the baits from being torn up is a dab of glue to help keep the bait from coming down the shaft of the hook on a bite.

3" spark shad or hazedong shad are what it's designed for, but I've also had success with the keitech easy shiner's as well.

Those 3" Storm Largo Shads are pretty tough cookies.
