Daiwa RG2000H-AB Spinning Reel for Ultralight Fishing

Post by Tony9 » Thu Nov 10, 2016 1:54 am

Any thoughts about this reel (2000 size) for ultralight fishing?

Thinking about pairing one with a 5'6" or 6'0" Daiwa Presso UL rod.

At 10.6oz it is too heavy for UL rods... and for UL rods under 6.5 foot a 2000 is too big... a UL reel is under 7oz...

The 2000 is listed at 7.9oz. Was thinking about the new Shimano Nasci 1000FB but its listed at 7.6oz. I don't want to spend Ci4+ prices for a UL reel

Go vintage. The original Shakespeare 2200 (not 2200 II) is perfect, IMHO. 7 ounces, cleans up nice, sealed Japanese bearings, and easily replaced fiber drag washers. I replaced mine with Teflon washers (it's a 3 stack drag). Can be found on Ebay, usually less than $20. You can also convert to bail-less easily.
Tight lines

I would just go with a smaller Nasci. ;)

Sorry... somehow I did not see the size.... 7.9oz is a bit on the heavy side but depending on the rod and how you want it to balance, it could work.

Hill Country gets some props for going old school. Respect for bail less I have never tried it. And it is cheap. Makes guys like me feel bad for fishing a Stella. Well... not bad... just over indulged.

Thanks, Bryin. Bail-less will change your life! Just don't cut the bail off a modern reel!

Some day I will try bail less... don't worry the bails on my reels are safe... cutting the bail on a Stella would give me a stroke. I thought the advantage to bail less was less line twist, I use Nanofil and don't have line twist problems.

If you manually close the bail (w/o cranking the handle), the advantages aren't as great. If you close the bail by cranking the handle, there are a couple of advantages. When the bail snaps closed, it can hit the line with enough force to throw an open loop on your spool, which after time will come off the spool as a big bird's nest. Been there, done that! Also, having no bail allows one to "feather" the line, and control your cast. Lastly, after the cast, you place your index finger on the spool rim, lift up to remove slack and "feel" the line - might really help with those finesse situations. Tight lines.

I am a manual closer... and I feather my line... so I think bail less would not do much for me.. other than make me one of the cool kids. Thanks Hill Country...

From looking at schematics, it appears that the Symetre FL's and the Nacsi 13's are nearly identical...comparing the 1000 size reels. The exception is that the bearing reduction to accommodate the new X-Ship bearing in the Symetre FL was the right side main bearing being replaced by a bushing; the Nasci 13 has a bushing in the line roller instead of a bearing.

The Nasci 13 500HG seems to be the Symetre 500FL, no X-Ship bearing, but bearings every where the Syemtre FJ's had them.

The Nasci 16 is the US market Nasci FB...I guess that the Nacsi 13 could be considered the Nasci FA...if it had been offered in the USA.

A note of interest is that the original Nasci...straight "F" model...had worm gear oscillation; I'm not sure on the Japanese year designation for that one, could be "10".

It seems that all Nasci 16's/FB's have bushings in the line roller. No 500 size either.

Eh, Sedona 500FD's and Symetre 500FJ's are few and far in between these days...so I ordered a Nasci 13 500HG.

Looks like the only 500 size reel left is the Sahara FE...that could be gone next.

like others have said, Daiwa 2000 size reel will be too heavy for a true UL. you could upsize the rod out of the UL category to something like a 7' medium-light or downsize the reel.

you mentioned that you didn't want to pay CI4+ prices for a UL reel. there's a few choices in that <$50 category.

Shimano Sienna 500FD. I've fished 1 of the older models. It was OK. I think there's some ideas online on how to upgrade with carbon fiber drags and maybe better bearings. It will definitely work, tho.

I have a bunch of Pflueger President 6720-6920 reels which I use mostly for icefishing on UL jigging sticks. They work great - although I prefer the older ones (more bearings + a little smoother). you can find them pretty cheap on ebay or amazon.

On the Daiwa side, there's not much available in the US that's UL and under $50. The closest is probably a Cabela's reel made by Daiwa. It's called the Daiwa Pro Guide 1000 and weighs in at 5.3 oz.

Good luck! :D

Thanks guys! Great info. My budget was < $100 for the reel. After much thought I will probably go with the 13 Nasci 500hg or the Symetre 500FL.

Either or is a good choice really.

I got the Nasci 13 500HG...given that it was $10 less and is just as close as the 500FL is to the old Symetre 500FJ and the older Sedona 500FD, which now seems just as unobtainable.

(Enroute from Japan. Be advised that HG really means HG...the old Symetre 500RJ and current 500FL have 4.7:1 gearing, the Nasci has 5.6:1.)
