Old 18 rods?

Post by Lefty372 » Sun Aug 01, 2021 10:52 am

Came across this company searching for bfs rods and they're made in Tx. Anyone have any experience with them? They have some UL and L casting rods in their lineup. https://old18.com/

There are a few decent youtube reviews on them. Haven't seen anyone on here mention them yet.

Thinking that UL with mod- fast action would do well with true finesse hard baits.

I only recently got into BFS, I prefer the faster action rods. I find I can fish micro cranks fine with them rather than fish jigheads and plastics with the moderate fast/moderate action rods. Kept me away from the Kuying Teton rods and made me go with a Proflex 2. Still good amount of uses for moderate or mod fast UL/BFS rods though, a lot of anglers prefer them.

Just getting into BFS myself. I do have sort of a mag BFS setup now. A Revo LTX on top of a Kistler Helium ML.Looking to get a true BFS setup now.

Never had any experience with Old 18, I think major craft rods are a great bang for the buck with their BFS lineups however. I just sold my MC bfs models but they are excellent. I now have a couple edge rods for my bfs (going for made in usa rods). I have the silver widow 721 (x-ray blank) and 662 inshore (IM blank) and both work very well with 4-6lb line and small baits.

They are not making their own blanks and wouldn’t say which ones they’re using. When a rod builder gets evasive on that question I hesitate to trust their products. Just my two cents. Rx angler on YouTube loves them!

I've watched a couple of Rx angler's videos. Not sure if he has a deal with them or not. Would be interesting to know where they get their blanks from though.

He does, he's sponsored by Old 18.

I have the arrius 7’ UL casting. It’s been a great rod foe me for bfs. Super light & great action. I’m sourcing a light action rod and wouldn’t hesitate to do another old 18.

Do you use it for treble hook baits or jigs? What type of line do you use? Wanting a jack of all trades rod to start with. They're listed as being mod-fast. How's the taper?

Sorry haven’t been on. I use it for both —- personally I like the rod a lot, paired w an alphas air tw. I use 6lb braid, trebles and jig hooks —- def better for trebles but works well for both.
