New UL spinning reel?

Post by heyitzpetah » Thu Dec 09, 2021 4:35 pm

Hi, I need some suggestions for a new 1000-2000 size spinning reel used for trout and crappie, using mostly jigheads/tubes/drop shot. Budget around 300$... give or take. Also, if it weighs under 5.8 oz that would be perfect. Any recommendations would be very helpful thanks!

Vanford C2000. 5.3oz 229.99?

Plastic but light and smooth and good line handling with the 2000 spool.

500 size is only 4.9oz but small spool.

The JDM Luvias FC LT 2000s. 5.3oz, super smooth and the drag is stellar. Super shallow 2000 size spool, holds 100m of 4lb line. A definite step up in refinement over my stradic FL 1000s and super light.

Thank you for the suggestions I did get the vanford, although light. I wasn't very impressed with its smoothness. It was honestly too geary for my taste. I will look into the luvias!

Finding a consistently smooth Shimano reel to reel is hard these days. One reel feels butter; then another of same reel feels geary.

Been that way for years.

They're still the best; but I hate that issue.

I agree a butter smooth shimano feels great, both of my stradics had a little more internal feel than I wanted initially but after i opened them up and added a touch of grease to the gears and some oil to the spool shaft they smoothed right up. I've noticed a lot of recent shimano's both spinning and casting have come very dry from the factory.

I'd get the Luvias...much better reel than the Vanford for not a whole lot more money.

Hi, alphahawk. I saw your recent video on the new presso 1000. How would you compare the luvias to the new presso? Should i spend a bit more and go with the daiwa 21 presso lt1000s-p?

The 2021 Presso reel is much better than the Luvias. I would most assuredly purchase it over the Luvias.

Any comparison of the Certate to these models? I know it is heavier and not really the same class, just seemed people were downing the Luvias when it came to market and saying it was no where near the Certate. I have a Stradic FL, but considered a Luvias instead of a Vanford (would like to try my first Daiwa spinning reel). Also what is your youtube channel, I think I know, but not sure?

The channel is TroutMagnetMan. I have no issues with the Luvias at all. I have the last 2000 series Certate Daiwa made and it is a great reel....but it is very heavy compared to the newer LT reels. If I could I would sell all the reels I own and replace them with the 21 Presso. Of course there is nothing wrong with the reels I have and I need more reels like I need a hole in the head...LOL.

Good info, I checked out your video on the Presso, great looking little reel. The issue for me is that slow gear ratio. I know a ton of fisherman in person and online who love slower speed spinning reels, but not for me. Whether it is swimbaits on a sturdy spinning rod or UL lures for crappie, a higher ratio is what I like. Actual ratio doesn't matter, some higher 5 gears have enough IPT for me, I prefer anything in the 26"+ range for retrieve.
