Rod for BFS/ultralight

How small is your rod and how light is your line? It's not about the size of your tackle, but how you work it. Come share your Ultralight and Bait Finesse System (BFS) fishing success here!

Rod for BFS/ultralight

Post by Norway_fish » Fri Jul 22, 2022 11:00 am

Hello all.
New guy from Norway here.
So far, I have been spinn fishing for 35+ years, spinners and spons from 6 grams and up in rivers for trout here, but now I wanna try the ultralight/BFS style, sure looks like a lot of fun.

But, I am used to cane rods, for spinning and fly fishing.
Are there any cane rods for BFS fishing?

If not, what will you recccomend me?
I will fish in rivers, trout, 1-5 grams lures and the trout will get up to 1000 gram at the max. The norm is around 3-700 grams.
I do like to have a JDM rod, if it is not a local made cane rod then.... :D
Reel?
well, I am old school, thinking about the Shimano Calcutta Conquest 50 (bfs?) or the same from Daiwa.

Thanks for looking and heling .

Welcome, Norway_fish.
And hello from Denmark.

You will find very little tackle suitable for BFS on the Scandinavian market.

I suggest you shop at Amazon.co.jp (tax and customs including), digitaka or japantackle.

Reel: Daiwa Alphas Air TW, Daiwa Gekkabijin or a Shimano Aldebaran BFS (2022 version).

Rod: Daiwa Purist 64LB-4V, Daiwa Silver Creek Stream Twitcher 51LB, Smith LTD TT-53 Tactist or similar rod.

Note, that most JDM trout rods are short by Scandinavian standards. If you need a longer rod you can consider 7'6" ABU Zoom Safari og 9' Daiwa Neo Stage Ayuing 90-MLB.

Best of luck with BFS - it is great fun :-)

If you want old school reel:

Shimano Conquest BFS.
Shimano Conquest 101 with an aftermarket avail spool.
Daiwa Millionaire with a KTF or Roro spool.

I have all three and prefer the Shimanos.

Hello and thank you for the reply.
Yes, here in Scandinavia BFS is not a big thing and to find gear is, well, very hard.
Thanks for he tips regarding shopping for gear.

The Smith rod looks very interesting. You have it?
What do you fish with it, weight on lures?

Glad you like the Conquest reels, make it easier for me to get one to :D

Cheers

I have the “smith bst-hm55ul/c”, which I really like for certain small stream situations. I mentioned the tactist version because I am unsure if the bst is still available. And because my impression of smith rods is good.

I really like the Conquest reels.
The Conquest BFS can be fished with stock spool but for 2-4 gram I prefer my KTF spool.
The other Conquest reels need aftermarket spools for BFS fishing.

I mostly use size 2-3 spinners (4-7 gram weight), and small JDM spoons (3.5-5 grams) and JDM sinking/countdown minnows (4-6 gram). I rarely go below 3.5 gram casting weight as the seatrout in my local streams happily eat the lures weighing around 5 gram.

Small spoons are very easy to cast so you can go quite low in casting weight, if you need to downsize.

See private message.

Photo of seatrout from yesterday - used a custom build 8 foot rod with 16 Metanium with KTF spool and a size 2 Mapso Ory spinner (4.5gram).

It has been a poor season for me so far. We have not had much rain and the searun trout run has been slow.
