Jig Rod Blank

Post by setsail26 » Thu Sep 24, 2020 6:11 pm

I'm looking to build a rod for casting 1/2 to 5/8 oz bass jigs with trailer into and around moderate weeds (generally milfoil). The top prospects on my list are the Point Blank 73MHXF and 73HXF. I have an NFC SJ 736 and while it it a great rod it doesn't have enough power for the thicker cover. Thanks for any opinions.

My choice would be the appropriate Point Blank blank. I would also consider something from the Phenix Umbx line. What are you looking for in a rod blank?

Looking for something between 7' and 7'6", light, sensitive, with a fast tip and good backbone to pop the jig off weeds without bending the rod double. I think the NFC blanks are too slow what what I want, and I know Point Blank has fast to extra fast blanks. I think if it were Phenix I would get a K2, but I suspect those are slower action than I would want for this purpose. Thanks for your help.

The Umbx is going to have the fastest, most stiff tips of the bunch. I only have PB Xfast in ml and medium models, so I can't speak on that. The K2 is definitely slower than the others. The umbx is no slouch in the sensitivity department.

I think I will be going with the PB 73H, but now I am curious about the UMBX. Are the ratings real, or are they rated higher than they can handle like some of the other Phenix blanks? Would a heavy rated Umbx be sufficient for 1/2 to 5/8 oz jigs?

Definitely. You might even want the medium heavy. This is the one blank line for Phenix where the blanks aren't over rated. I'm pretty sure the medium heavy is quite a ways North of 500 grams of power, but I'd have to check. If it makes your decision any easier, I'd go with the PB 1ST between these 2 choices, as I prefer all characteristics of these blanks. They are indeed special.
