Winter 21/22 Projects

When production rods are not enough, it's time to go custom. Come share your experiences building and/or ordering a custom rod and tell us if you'll ever go back to off the shelf.

Winter 21/22 Projects

Post by Cal » Tue Feb 08, 2022 7:51 am

Finally gave in to NFC's last sale and purchased a couple of HM blanks to mess around with this winter. I've gotten a little better at assembling the grip and am still a hack with my epoxy work, but the projects allow me to stay creative during this down time. Shown here is an NFC Flip 766-1 HM blank wrapped with Fuji Ti/SiC guides I stripped off another rod (spiraled left), CFX carbon grip, finished in purple/pink and matched with my Revo4 IKE:

This second build is the NFC MB709-1 HM blank wrapped with Fuji Ti/SiC guides I stripped off another rod (spiraled left), CFX carbon grip, finished in black epoxy with gold fleck and gold epoxy rings at the base and top 4 guides as a strike indicator... matched here with my Abu/ZPI AE74

I have some Phenix blanks that just arrived yesterday as my next project. They are the K2 TXC736H and UltraSwimbait 790H blanks and will be finished with Phenix's own Essex SS/SiC guides. Just waiting for handle parts that I couldn't order until I had the blanks in hand.

Hoping to wrap two more Point Blank rods too, but the stuff I want is out of stock at the moment.

I built up a Flip 766 HM, it is great. More on the finesse side for your type of flipping. It is great for around me. Super sensitive and balanced well for a minimalist build.

That's so cool! I've considered dabbling in that arena, but my budget and garage space cannot take another branch off hobby of my main hobby. Pouring baits might be where it has to stop.

Are you using mica powder in the epoxy to create the colors? Really digging those carbon grips!

Here's another for you guys...

Phenix Ultra Swimbait 790H blank built with a CFX carbon split grip config, Fuji's split seat with the minimal trigger (SKTS16) and a mix of Essex and Fuji guides.. i used Fuji runners because what I had left over was slightly larger than the 5.5 Essex guides I ordered. Came in at 5oz even full build. I don't have any photos of it yet, but if you have Instagram, you can see a reel I made of it here:
