NFC XRAY MB684 VS SB684

When production rods are not enough, it's time to go custom. Come share your experiences building and/or ordering a custom rod and tell us if you'll ever go back to off the shelf.

NFC XRAY MB684 VS SB684

Post by RGMatt » Sat Oct 08, 2022 5:23 pm

hello TT,
Been awhile since ive been on the boards. anyway...as title says, MB684 vs SB684 XRAYS. Blanks look very very similar in the deflection charts from rodhouse. the SB is alittle lighter in weight.

Read in another topic here the SB684 RDA at 386g and fast action. Anyone compare the two?
RDA on the MB?

which one has a stiffer tip section?

what the SB taper like...do the SB Blanks fit somewhere in between SJ and MB? never used or built on a blank labled SB.

any info is appreciated

TIA
Matt

What does SB stand for? Spinnerbait designation?

It’s the NFC “Spin Bass” category. You can google that term for more information, but it doesn’t feel like anybody knows exactly what it means. https://northforkcomposites.com/product-tag/spin-bass/

Spin bass is supposed to be the little brother to the mag bass tapers, but I think there's a nickels difference, tbh. I've found the old Batson USA-made Rainshadow blanks have the same backbone down low with a lighter tip vs the corresponding MB blank. I have a custom spiral-wrapped casting rod built on the RX-7 ISB 781 and its among my favorites.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

ah spin bass, now that ya mention batson, they did/do use the label Bass Spin "SB" ...i do remember building on a blank years ago maybe an SB720 but i couldnt tell ya model for sure. i do remeber that blank being very similar to a 1 power spin jig blank.

im most familar St Croix rods and blanks. so i kinda use their numbers as my baseline...from the numbers it looks like the SB684 falls right in between the SCs66MF and the 68MXF as far as power goes.
