7' Medium Heavy + Fast Action blank?

When production rods are not enough, it's time to go custom. Come share your experiences building and/or ordering a custom rod and tell us if you'll ever go back to off the shelf.

7' Medium Heavy + Fast Action blank?

Post by toddmc » Fri Feb 17, 2023 10:34 am

Does anyone know of a high end blank that comes between the RDA 600 of the old IMX MBR843 and the RDA 670 of the old IMX MBR844 blank? I have a few old Loomis custom 843 and 844 blanks, as well as several Mudhole Elite-X blanks supposedly made with some of the old Loomis equipment (very similar feeling blanks). I would love to have something in a fast action to build between the two powers. We can call it a MHF+ power.

Thanks for those numbers. I may end up with an Elite-X NMB844. I have the Elite-X MB874 and I think that it is slightly lighter than the Loomis 874 and the Mudhole High-Mod 874 that I have. This makes me believe that the latest Mudhole blanks are slightly lighter that the old IMX blanks of the same power.

Thanks for these numbers. My Phenix K2 715 is my frog rod. I feel it is a little heavier than all of my Loomis IMX 844's. It is really beefy. I'm surprised that is has an RDA of 655. I would think that it would be a little higher. I really wish that Point Blank made a 7'HF because it would probably fit the bill. I'm afraid to cut down a 7'3" HF because my Point Blank 7'6" HF doesn't feel like it would be fast enough if I cut it down at the bottom.

I've measured one MHX NMB844 and the power was way lower than what you're asking - 479

You can expand your options if you're willing to trim a bit.

So...I do have two different 715's in my database now that I look further down the list. One is 655 and one is 681. And by the serial numbers I assigned the rods, they date back to 2012.

I will say that I felt these were under the power that they were rated at when I built them. Seems like most of the K2's I've built fell short of the power I was expecting given the line/lure ratings.

If you're only going to cut 3" off, I don't think you'll feel you lost speed. Point Blank blanks are some of the fastest out there and getting 3" cut off won't even bring them down into the range of something like a North Fork MB series.

I measured up the PB701MHF at 70°. I cut 2" off for the customer and it measured out at 69° after being trimmed. I doubt even the most astute angler could pick up 1° of difference.

Thanks Matt. I may cut something down to try to get exactly what I want.

I think that you are right. I just don't know what blank that I want to trim. I just want something a little lighter in power than an 844.

Thanks. I think that would work, but I think that I am going to cut down the NMB873.5. That blank has the exact type of tip that I am looking for. Am I correct in assuming that cutting the butt decreases the RDA slightly? If so, this would put this cut down blank right where I need it.

If you cut the butt and keep the handle length the same you shorten the working length so the deflection and measured power are slightly less.

Trim butt by 2", so working length is 2" shorter, deflection distance is 2/3" shorter.

You can measure the power without cutting by moving the front support point to the new working length.

Thanks. I'm going to load up one of my MB874 builds 3 inches up the handle to see if I like the way it feels.
