Mercury 9.9 4stroke same price as 2stroke. Why?

Post by Rodon » Tue Mar 23, 2004 9:41 pm

Looks like it will be $1840 for the 4-stroke Mercury 9.9hp motor. Is that overpriced for a new 9.9? It seems reasonable to other pricing.

Anyway why is the 2 and 4 stroke motors the same price? Why buy a 2 stroke? I would rather not mix the oil and gas.

I am not positive but i believe 2 strokes are lighter and are more powerful.

2 Strokes are being phased out due to environmental laws. 4 Strokes are "cleaner" than 2 strokes where you have to mix oil and gas...

Yes, some 2 strokes are being phased out. But check out Evinrude ETEC 2 strokes. They said this 2 stroke engine is designed so effecient,
it might pass environmental regulations! Plus in that 2 stroke, you'll
get really good kick. Where the Mercury Verado went 4 stroke
and supercharged it for that "kick"

So why are the outboard in question the same price?
That really beats me. In my State they are not allowed to sell 2 strokes(new)
anymore. But normally, 4 strokes should be more expensive than
2 strokes due to more cylinders, injectors, or whatever it has.

Since this is a higher priced item, have you tried calling other
dealers? Call around and find the best price. But that price sounds
about right. Motors are expensive! for a small boat, or maybe any boat
the motor costs just as much or more than the boat itself.

Looks like in April Mercury will have their 2005 8 and 9.9 HO 4-strokes out. They have a 3 year warranty vs the 2-stroke 1 year warranty. I did not see an alt on the 9.9 4-stroke specs though.

I think the price between the 2004 and 2005 model engines is within $80 so I will order a 2005. I have Justin from Bass Pro checking on some info. I will write again tonight.

The warranty on the 4 strokes are much better.
My friend has a new Merc and he bought it when they have the special
additional warranty. Great to have it.

Bass Pro did not want to sell a 2005 becase they had 2004s in stock. They lost the sale on both.

Bought a 2500 Sustain instead. Donated a reel and got $50 off (should have only been $40 but the girl gave me $50). Pretty nice deal.

Also bought a lot of other stuff.

I bought a basicly brand new 2001 9.9 four stroke Mercury about two weeks ago. The price was way way low at $1100 so I could not pass it up. I am very happy with it.

Do you have the 2005 now? I would love to see it.

The 2001 I bought is huge compared to the 2005 I bet.
