Live vests

Post by AquaFish » Wed May 07, 2003 8:38 pm

Looking for a new set of live vests.
Any recommendations?

Are those jacket+life vest good?
How about SOSPENDERs, those self-inflate ones?

Do you wear yours on every fishing trip?

Thks mates

I have 4 kinds of life jackets.

1. Mustang survival jacket (I wear this on my whaler). Keeps you warm. Looks like a regular bomber jacket except they come in bright colours.

2. SOSpenders (I use that when the seas are flat). Automatic inflation type. Uses CO2 cartridge to inflate. Backup is manuel inflation.

3. Type 2 & 3 vest always carry along in the boat.

4. Type 4 throwable devices that will float (always carry one or two of those).

I wear my life jacket/vest in every fishing trip while boating.
My favorite life vest/jacket is the Mustang survival jacket and the regular type 2 or 3 vest. When I am on my whaler, I wear my mustang jacket. When I am on a larger boat, I wear my type 2 or 3.

*701 people died in recreational U.S. boating accidents in 2000.

*Drowning was the cause of three-quarters (519) of these deaths; 90 percent of those drowned were not wearing life jackets.

*Capsizing and falling overboard accounted for two-thirds of all boating fatalities.

I don't have any of the self inflating suspenders, my buddy had a pair the only problem was he forgot it in the back of his truck in a downpour. It inflated itself.

I have a SOSpender manual inflation PFD. I use it for float tubing. The automatic ones won't work for me because my tube sits low in the water, it's an old Buck's Bags Buckaroo. I used to have a Patagonia Fishing PFD, but they recalled them. The SOSpender is MUCH more comfortable sitting and casting from the tube. I will hopefully be upgrading to the pontoon boat in 2007. Then I might switch to an auto inflater SOSpender.
