Converting jon boat to bass boat

Post by JWR075 » Tue Jul 12, 2011 1:55 pm

Right now, I am fishing either small and medium ponds or certain creeks on a local lake. I want to get a small boat to fish them, as my purchase of a new home has hampered my bass boat fund. So would you rather use a v hull or flat bottom jon boat?

I have a grizzly 1648 mod-v jon. I feel the mod-v provides a better ride in waves as apposed to a regular jon. I'm not sure what size boat you are looking at, but the mod-v is not available in the smaller bottom widths. Get as wide as you can afford. Throw in some decking and you'll have a nice smaller water bassing machine :D

A great place to learn more about bass boat conversion is at www.tinboats.com. I took a 14' deep v and made a nice custom bass boat out of, but like always get the biggest boat you can afford.

Here is the link to my build.

... Bringing up an older topic here but i have to 2nd the tinboats site. Its great!

I had an old 14ft jon boat that I put decks in, bow mount trolling motor, bilge pump, etc - it turned out great and made a pretty good fishing machine on smaller lakes... =D>

The boat gets heavy with all the decking and can hurt the fishing performace - center of gravity is shifted and can get unstable, but i've fished out of that little boat (2 guys/cooler/gear) with little problems, but sometimes can be unstable when leaning over and setting hooks!
