Gas Mileage

Post by SCbass » Mon Oct 22, 2012 9:37 pm

Hey guys, I'm wondering how much of a difference there is in gas mileage between Like a 2010 to 2011 150 and 250 on an 18 and 21 foot boat respectively. Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

I can't speak for a 250 to a 150 but a 225 to a 115 is a huge difference. I get maybe 2 or 3 miles per gallon on my 225 and on my 115 I can fish forever on a tank of gas. I take my 115 to canada on a trip every year and probably use it for 150+ miles in that week and only use about 1/2 a tank of gas or so.

Thanks I was just wondering, my dad has a boat with a 225, and I know it's pretty rough on gas and I will be getting a boat of my own pretty soon so was trying to decide how big I wanted to go.

Not only do you have to think about gas mileage in the boat but in the vehicle pulling it. The smaller the boat the less gas it will take to pull it.

Here are some links for you:

But there's no doubt that a smaller boat and a smaller motor will use less fuel. A lot of that has to do with how hard you run the motor, too. Full throttle = big bucks at the gas station.

There is more to it than that as well. Is is carbeurated or direct injected? Tow stroke or four stroke. How are you running it? There is a very effecient RPM range to run all boats and when you exceed that your mileage drops off dramatically. This question cannot accurately be answered with so many variables. Yes smaller boats and engines can burn less fuel but if it is an older 150 compared to a modern efficient 225 or 250 it may be comparable. Oil consumption is also a factor. Newer DI engines burn much less oil and that in itself is a big cost savings. I used to buy my oil in 55 gallon drums years ago. Now I only buy it 5-10 gallons at a time.

It all depends on the year. If you get a Pro XS, they get around 5-7 MPG, but my 1997 225 EFI drinks the fuel. I get about 2 MPG. Im thinking about buying a newer motor, the money id save in gas would pay for itself

My 225 pro XS is double that of my old 200 XR6 carb..
Love the pro XS!
But if your worried about gas mileage on a big motor and boat you shouldn't be buying.. ;)
They all SUCK gas..

With a 225-250HP motor, (DFI), you should see 3.5-5.5 MPG. A 150hp should get 4.5-7+MPG (on plane). Both rates depend on RPM. All motors SHOULD burn the same amount of oil, in a way. The newer DFI engines burn less oil because they burn less gas. The newer/bigger oil reservoirs of 2+ gallons can be deceiving as well. All 2-strokes should burn a 50:1 gas to oil ratio.

If you get a boat that you will grow out of in a few years, the costs to upgrade far exceed gas costs. I did this and many people do the same thing. If the boat exceeds your needs than you will be fine.

The fuel milage you get is more closely related to the hull the fastest hulls get the best fuel milage, why? you might ask, because there more slippery and the differences are massive the numbers can be double when comparing the same motor and those slppiery boat pull along behind your tow vehicle really easily as well, why because there lighter and more aero-dynamic.
