Minkotta Max 80- RUST issues

Post by RMCatchNrelease » Tue Jan 28, 2014 4:56 am

My trolling motor is starting to rust where the what meets the head unit. Please advise....

My plan was to sand it down and spray it with something marine grade. What can I do?

Funny you found that on the local forum. Some decent advice on there sometimes. No where close to this forum though.
I'd sand it down and use some rustproofing paint, has worked pretty good on some things I've used it for so far.

The part that scares me is that it is near that joint. There is some sort of sealant there and I don't want to do any harm.

I guess I may try to tape it off first and see what happens. I wish I had not waited as long as I did.

I had a MinnKota Fortrex 80 that rusted in the exact same spot and looked the same as yours. I don't know what you can do except follow JB's advice.

Sand it put some Naval Jelly on it made by loctite (I am pretty sure) then a good oil based rust control paint. ie ruetoleum. And I have 27 years in the paint business FYI.
