Best outboard?

Post by justgopen » Sun Feb 01, 2004 5:45 pm

Hi everyone,

A buddy of mine has a very old boat and is need of a good 4 stroke motor. Anybody have any reccommendations considering all the brands out there? Priority is reliability.

Honda & Yamaha both make very reliable 4-stroke outboard engines.

Looking for a good motor around 125-150HP. I have heard very good things about the new Honda motors. I went to a dealer this weekend and found out the larger motors are even equipped with Honda VTEC!

Hey Justgopen,

Team TackleTour just bought a new boat, and it came with a 90HP
4stroke Mercury outboard. This outboard is actually a Yamaha
and the lower gear area is Mercury.
90/115/200/225 4 strokers are good.
Honda's are great. If I had a choice, I would have gone with a Honda
instead. Those are supposed to be extremely reliable and more
fuel efficient than others. Honda is great at making small engines.

Thanks JIP,

From everything i have read and heard from the dealers the Honda's are the most reliable, and quiet running. Just have to get over the higher price.

I live in Goleta, CA. its just north of Santa Barbera. I have 2 good lakes in driving distance, Cachuma and Casitas. Both are trophy bass lakes. Problem is the lakes are both real good sized and paddling my kickboat just doesn't cover enough water.

justgopen,

Have you considered a kayak or inflatable pontoon boat with an electric trolling motor?

justgoopen,

I've got a Mercury Optimax 150. It's a two stroke, but gets comparable if not better gas mileage than most 4 strokes. Plus you get the lighter weight and better holeshot of a 2-stroke. The 135 qualifies as an ultra low emission engine, which will keep the powers that be in California happy. The 150 is only a 2 star, very low emission engine, but should still meet CA's requirements. Just something else to look at in addition to the 4-strokes.

Once it comes time to replace the hydrasports motor, I will probably be looking at the new EVINRUDE ETEC 200 or 225 hp.
