Can I used it without oil?

Post by Elpablo » Wed May 18, 2011 10:48 pm

I wonder if i can use de boca bearings orange seal without oil because with oil they turn a little bit slower. I put just a little bit of oil with the top of the pin.
Thank you in advance :)

It's my understanding that you can run ceramic bearings dry. The fact that the ceramic balls are so smooth the do not cause much friction.

Now, the steel races are another matter. If the bearing race gets a small amount of corrosion (which they are likely to) if exposed to water and moisture, then the bearings will fail.

A small drop of oil on each bearing set will not noticeably affect their performance (IMO), but will go a long way ensure their long life.

Just my opinion, I could be wrong :D

I just had a conversation with Larry Aubain ,a Boca Bearing rep. He told me that in freshwater applications, the shields facing the inside of the reel can be removed resulting in increased spool speed . Shields should be left intact for saltwater use....Lubrication can be, no lubrication, noisier but increased free spoiling),one drop of oil, or dry lubing with Tungsten disulfide.....The bearings are easy to clean..Soak in Acetone or mineral spirits, then blow out with compressed air.....I'm leaning toward removing the inner shields on spool bearings and dry lubing.

This applies to Ceramic bearings only.
