Megabass's New Sleeper Craw : Just Tie It On, Pitch It Out, and Get Bit

Image

Introduction: One of the surest methods to get anglers to bite as both fishermen and consumers is with realistic craw profiles. Anyone who has fished with live crawdads knows the effectiveness of this little delicacy, so a bait that imitates the crustacean just makes sense. Unfortunately, not all realistic craw baits are effective. In fact, the baits that resemble a craw only in passing are often better at eliciting that bite than those that look real to our eyes. With that in mind, when Megabass of America debuted their latest take on a crawfish imitator, the Sleeper Craw, my reaction was both of skepticism and excitement. Skepticism for the afore mentioned experience with realistic craw profile baits, and excitement because if had to choose a manufacturer to overcome that obstacle, Megabass would be high on the list. Let's take a look.

I’ve had some but have only fished them a tiny bit so far. The callout you how realistic craw profiles often don’t perform is good, there’s even mention of that (with a chart from a study) in Knowing Bass.

One thing I haven’t learned during my limited fishing time (or from the article) is how easily Sleeper Craws snag compared to a jig. Do you have any data or anecdotes on that?

Snags from the hook are very minimal... the base will get caught up in muck just like anything else, but I can't recall an instance where I was snagged via the hook - doesn't mean it didn't happen. I just can't recall

Has anybody else noticed that the Sleeper Craw has a Fook Guard?

I hope these become available in smaller sizes and weights.

How come?

I've caught 12 inch to 6 lbers this spring on the Sleeper Craw. I've found that even the small fish have the lure in the mouth.

Are they that good? May need to pick up one, so many confusing color options.

I really think so. They skip like a senko and I just work it on the bottom like your favorite jig. The durability is really good, I've caught 15+ fish on one that is still going strong. As for colors, for me, it is the simple black/blue for dingy/stained water and numa ebi (green pumpkin) or grass craw (watermelon red) for other water conditions.

I realize that I sound like a MB commercial here  , but the sleeper craw is the real deal, imo. Again, I've caught fish 12 inches to 6 lbs. on it thus far and the all had it in the mouth and hooked on the roof of their mouth. I like the dark sleeper and sleeper gill lures--I LOVE the sleeper craw.

The negative that I've read on them is to keep them in their own storage/blister pack as they don't play nice with other plastics.

I have been fishing it into moderate/open cover on the P5 Dark Sleeper rod, 14 lb. Sunline flouro. I haven't used it w/braid yet and even though the "hidden hook" design (similar to the other sleeper models) is really good, I am not sure how well this lure would work fishing it in the slop/pads--I'd opt for a standard jig in those conditions.
