Spool weight ranking list

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Spool weight ranking list

Post by Marcos82 » Tue Oct 26, 2021 6:49 am

Hi guys,

Does something have or know the link in this forum or in another website about a spool weight rankig of the lightest spools out there? I searched for it here, but I was unsuccessful.

Regards

Let's see if this works... and if it's useful. Not sure when I started weighing the spools on reels, so there will be some missing, but these are listed from lightest spool to heaviest.

Column order: Manufacturer : Fishing Reel : Reel Weight in ounces : Spool Weight in grams unless otherwise noted

The Tatula Type R review mentions a 16 gram spool but pic of the spool on a scale shows 10.4 as does this pic.

The spool feels very light in hand and could be 10.4 grams. I have one but no scale. The weight difference between a old 100 and a 100 Type R was 7.9 vs 7.6 which is significant enough to warrent a 10.4 spool weight. Japapan tackle lists the spool at 16.2 but they also state that the Tatula 150 is a 36 mm spool which it is not. I think they are just making assumptions on spools sometimes and especially USDM reels. The 150 is just a relaunched old 100 with differently calculated line capacity to give it the 150 moniker for marketing purposes.

I weighed the Tatula Type R spool as 16 grams when it was empty. (My scale does not display fractions of an ounce.)

I just weighed it with line on it--fluorocarbon, probably with nylon monofilament backing, but possibly braid backing with short mono spool connector. It weighs 24 grams filled.

Both the Quantum EXO 100 and the original Quantum Smoke Burner had spool that were less than 12 grams.

Some of these OEM reels can surprise you with a light weight spool. There was some Lews that the BR members were raving about that had a 10 gram spool and at one point was sale priced at $110 or something. I can never remember the nonsense lews names to the reels. Too many to remember.

The modestly-priced Curado 50E came with an 11 gram stock spool.
